SD Text A

Self-Development is a process where you take the responsibility of your own development and learning, through reflection, assessment and action. Self-Development programs contain a course of action for self help, through which they help individuals recover from compulsion, addiction and other problems.

Here is a beautiful story from the life of the Buddha to shed more light on the perennial question 'what is Self-Development'?

The Buddha was close to attaining parinirvana (complete nirvana). As he was sleeping, he heard his closest disciple Ananda weep. The Buddha opened his eyes and asked Ananda feebly, 'why are you crying?'. Ananda said, 'you are going away and we have not yet attained enlightenment. Who will guide us now?'

The Buddha, with the last ounce of his strength said, 'appa deepo bhava'. It means, 'be a light unto yourself'. A little later, he closed his eyes serenely and passed into the void. All his life, the Buddha pointed the way to his disciples. Similarly, Self-Development programs can show you the way, but you have to do the walking yourself.

Carl Jung, the famous psychologist once said that you should aim to awaken the unconscious. Until then, your life will be directed by it (what you are not conscious of) and you will believe it to be fate.

According to the Bhagavad Gita, a guru or teacher is the one who dispels darkness. A blind man cannot lead another blind man. Similar is the case with Self-Development. Only a person who has undergone extensive training in Self-Development can coach others.

In Self-Development programs, your Life Coach will help you understand what you need to do to develop yourself. You will also be taught how to reconcile with conflict, find meaning in what you do, develop compassion and grow your confidence. Self-Development Coaching can also help you understand your weaknesses and guide you with ways to rectify them.

SD Text C

One of the greatest investments that you can make, is in yourself. The great Greek philosopher, Socrates once said that men should examine their lives. Self-examination will help you come across your faults and learn how to overcome them. When you attend Self-Development Coaching, you will learn more about yourself, your strengths and weaknesses, which you may not have discovered on your own.

You will be able to communicate better. You can also connect with people at an emotional/spiritual level and understand them better.

SD Text D

An old African proverb says when there is no enemy within, nothing on the outside that can harm you. First, you have to fight and defeat the demons inside, before you can face the world. Self-Development programs seek to reinforce that thought. The goal of Self-Development is to reach self actualization. Abraham Maslow has explained self actualization beautifully as, 'what a man is capable of being, he should be'.

You too, as much as anyone else in the universe also deserve your own affection and love. Many people knowingly or unknowingly indulge in self sabotage. They strangle their dreams themselves. Inside every person, there is a slumbering giant. Self-Development Coaching can help you awaken that giant. On the other hand, Personal Development is more concerned with the things that you have to do to reach your full potential. There is a thin line between Self-Development and Personal Development and they both often overlap.
